Kefalonia in May: weather, sea, Easter and what is open

Kefalonia in May is green, quiet and warm by day, with a sea that is still waking up. This guide goes deeper than our month-by-month weather and best time to visit page: how the month changes from the first week to the last, how cold the water really is, which caves, boats and ferries are running, how the island celebrates Greek Easter on 2 May 2027, and what to pack.

Kefalonia weather in May, week by week

The averages for Argostoli are a high of about 22 °C, a low of about 16 °C and roughly 35 mm of rain over the month (2015–2024). Those numbers hide a clear progression, because May sits between April, with highs of about 19 °C, and June, with about 27 °C. The first days of May often feel like late spring, with fresh evenings and the chance of a shower; by the last week the island usually feels like early summer, and days in the mid-20s are common.

Rain is possible but most days are dry: 35 mm is the same as April and a fraction of the 190 mm that falls in November. The days are long, with about 14 hours of daylight, sunrise between about 06:15 and 06:45 and sunset between about 20:30 and 21:00, so there is time for a beach in the afternoon and dinner outside. Mount Ainos and the hill villages are noticeably cooler, and the west coast catches more wind and swell than the sheltered south and east.

Sea temperature in May: can you swim?

The sea is the one thing that is not quite ready. It averages about 19 °C in May, up from 17 °C in April but well below the 24 °C of June and the 26 °C of September. Because the sea lags behind the air, it is even cooler in May than in October, when it is still about 23 °C.

Plenty of visitors from northern Europe do swim, but most people find it bracing and keep it to a short dip. Choose a sunny afternoon late in the month and a shallow, sheltered bay on the south or east coast, where the water warms first; the west-coast beaches, including Myrtos, are often rougher when the afternoon wind picks up. Sunbeds and beach bars open gradually through the month, so early May beaches are quiet and simple. See the best beaches in Kefalonia to pick a spot, and bring a thin wetsuit if you want to snorkel for long.

Spring is also a good time to see wildlife in the water. The conservation group Wildlife Sense has counted more than 100 loggerhead turtles in the bay of Argostoli at once in April and May, and from late May females start nesting on southern beaches such as Mounda; keep away from marked nests.

What is open in May: caves, boats and ferries

The two show caves near Sami are run by the Municipality of Sami, which announces their hours at short notice. In May 2026 both opened daily from 10:00 to 16:00 between 4 and 20 May (last entry 15:30), then from 10:00 to 17:00 between 21 and 31 May (last entry 16:30). The 2027 hours had not been announced at the time of writing, so check the municipality's latest notice before you drive over. By late May the midday sun is almost as high as in midsummer, so on a clear day the light on the lake at Melissani Cave can already be good, without the summer coach queues. Drogarati Cave stays at about 18 °C whatever the weather outside.

Boat trips and boat hire run roughly from May to October. In early May there are fewer departures and more days lost to wind, so keep your plans flexible; by late May most operators run a normal programme. See boat trips and boat hire for the harbours and the licence rules. The ferry from Sami to Ithaca runs all year, which makes a day on Ithaca easy even before the organised cruises start.

Seasonal ferries also come back. In 2026 West Ferry ran twice a day between Fiskardo and Vasiliki on Lefkada in May, and the Pessada–Zakynthos crossing started on 15 May; check the operators for the current timetables. Argostoli, Lixouri and Sami are open all year, while hotels and tavernas in resorts such as Skala, Lassi and Fiskardo reopen through April and May, and by the second half of May almost everything is open.

Greek Easter 2027 on Kefalonia: Sunday 2 May

In 2027 Greek Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday 2 May, five weeks after Western Easter on 28 March. Good Friday is 30 April, Holy Saturday is 1 May and Easter Monday, 3 May, is a public holiday. Easter is the biggest festival of the Orthodox year, and spending it on the island is a good reason to come at the start of May.

Holy Week is marked in every church. On the evening of Good Friday each parish carries its Epitaphios, the bier of Christ decorated with spring flowers, through the streets with hymns; in Argostoli the processions meet in the central square. On the morning of Holy Saturday, according to local tourism sources, clay jugs are thrown from balconies and smashed in the street outside the church of Agios Spyridon on the Lithostroto and in Kambana Square. Around midnight the Resurrection service ends with candles lit from the Holy Light, the greeting "Christos Anesti" (Christ is risen), fireworks and firecrackers.

On Easter Sunday families roast lamb on the spit and crack red-dyed eggs. Expect shops and many services to close or keep short hours from Good Friday to Easter Monday, and book accommodation and ferries early, because many Greeks travel home for the holiday. In churches, cover your shoulders and knees, stand quietly at the back if you do not know the service, and follow what the people around you do.

Wildflowers, walking and Mount Ainos

Late April and May are the greenest weeks of the year, before the summer drought turns the hillsides gold. Poppies colour the fields, wild sage and fennel line the lanes, and the olive trees come into blossom. On Mount Ainos, the island's highest mountain at 1,628 m, the national park protects forests of Greek fir and black pine, and in spring a wild peony flowers in the shade of the firs.

With highs around 22 °C, May is one of the best months for walking. Start early, carry water and a layer for the summit, and note that many trailheads, including those on Mount Ainos, are only practical with a hire car. The wildfire risk is lower than in summer, but never light fires or drop cigarettes.

Crowds, prices and flights in May

May is quiet. According to Fraport Greece, only about one in eight of the 893,697 passengers who used Kefalonia airport in 2025 passed through between January and May. You can park at the famous beaches, find a table at a harbour taverna without booking and walk round Fiskardo or Assos without the summer crowds. The exceptions are Easter weekend and the last week of the month, when the UK half-term holiday usually falls around the late-May bank holiday (31 May in 2027).

Accommodation and car hire are generally cheaper than in July and August, and you have far more choice; see where to stay in Kefalonia and our breakdown of what a holiday in Kefalonia costs. International flights run roughly from April or May to October. In 2026, for example, Jet2's Manchester flights began on 2 May, and Jet2 already has Kefalonia on sale for summer 2027; other airlines publish their schedules later, so check your airline. Outside those dates you usually connect through Athens; see Kefalonia airport.

What to pack for Kefalonia in May

Pack for warm days and cool evenings: light summer clothes, a jumper or light jacket for nights around 16 °C and for the mountains, and a thin waterproof for the occasional shower. The sun is already strong, so bring sun cream, sunglasses and a hat. Add walking shoes with grip, water shoes for pebble beaches, swimwear, and something that covers your shoulders and knees for churches and monasteries, especially over Easter.

May, late April, June or September?

Late April is greener still, with highs of about 19 °C, but the sea is around 17 °C and more businesses are closed. May adds warmth, longer days and, by the end of the month, almost everything open. June brings highs of about 27 °C and a 24 °C sea, so it is better if swimming is the priority, while September has the warmest sea of the year, about 26 °C, with more rain, around 75 mm. If you want walking, sightseeing and quiet beaches, choose May; if you want long swims as well, aim for the last week of May or early June.
